Some folks claim that tired is normal. If you’re not tired, you’re not working hard enough. But that’s not true at all! If you find that you have to drag your feet through each day, you should not conclude that your suffering is just a normal part of the everyday grind. You may be suffering from sleep apnea or another disorder that robs you of the rest you need to feel energized and productive. Let’s discuss how a sleep diary and sleep testing in Boca Raton could be your first steps on the way to becoming a happier, healthier, and less tired human being.
Set Up Your Sleep Diary
If you suspect that your sleep patterns indicate sleep apnea, start keeping a sleep diary. There is no official way to do this. You could find an app for your smartphone; some smart watches will even analyze your sleep for you. You might also choose to track your sleep the old-fashioned way. Keep a pen and notebook by your bed, and use them to monitor your sleep habits. Some things you might record include:
- When you go to bed and when you get up
- How you feel upon waking
- How often during the night you wake up
- How much alcohol and caffeine you consumed during the day (and when you consumed it)
- Whether you took any naps during the day
You should keep your sleep diary for a minimum of one to two weeks. After that period, bring your diary to your doctor or to a dentist who has experience with sleep medicine. If they believe there is a problem, they can help you arrange for an official sleep test.
Sleep Testing Leads to an Official Diagnosis
During a sleep test, a machine will monitor your breathing, heartrate, and other vital statistics while you sleep. A sleep study may take place in a laboratory, or your doctor might give you a device to take home for a night. In either case, after the test is complete, an expert will analyze the results and let you know if you have a sleep disorder, such as sleep apnea in Boca Raton.
Your New Life with Sleep Apnea Treatment
If you are diagnosed with sleep apnea, you can begin treatment. Most treatment options, such as oral appliance therapy, are noninvasive and work very quickly. As you adapt to the treatment and your body begins to get the high-quality rest it needs, you can expect to feel more alert and energized on a daily basis. You may find that you are happier and more productive at work — and you’ll be at a lower risk of serious long-term health issues, such as cardiovascular disease.
Tired should not be your “normal.” If you suspect you have sleep apnea, seek diagnosis and treatment right away. Doing so could drastically improve your life!
