The CPAP Alternative

Broward County Sleep Dentistry PatientsThe loud, annoying noise, the irritating mask, the discomfort of the tubes – imagine going to sleep without all that!

Imagine waking up and looking in the mirror and not seeing mask lines or puffy, watery eyes. Your nose and throat won’t feel scratchy and dry. You won’t feel like a bloated balloon. Other patients complain that CPAP interferes with intimacy. Some feel claustrophobic. Bedtime becomes more complicated with the time required to set up and maintain the CPAP machine and associated apparatus. Traveling with the CPAP requires additional luggage space and electrical converters if traveling abroad.

Use of the CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine is the most common and effective treatment for sleep apnea but many people can’t or won’t deal with CPAP’s associated problems. Fortunately, for these patients there is a CPAP alternative.

This alternative is oral appliance therapy available through a specially trained sleep medicine sleep apnea dentist like Dr. Kenneth Mogell. The sleep medicine dentist works with your sleep physician to help manage your snoring and sleep apnea. Sleeping with a small, specially made custom appliance is recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine for treatment of mild to moderate sleep apnea and snoring. In cases where a patient with more severe sleep apnea cannot tolerate the CPAP machine, an oral appliance is also recommended.

What Happens at My Appointment?

At the first visit, your medical history and polysomnogram (PSG – sleep study) will be reviewed. A screening examination of your periodontal (gums) health, tooth health (visual and x-ray), and temporomandibular joint (TMJ – jaw joint) health will be performed. Optimal snoring and sleep apnea management is achieved when all of the dental systems are healthy and functioning well together.

A comprehensive examination will allow us to evaluate your specific situation and discuss your treatment options. This will let us know that an oral appliance for snoring and sleep apnea management has the best chance of long term success.

In addition to the evaluation, a review of sleep hygiene, dental concerns, oral appliance choices, costs and insurance coverage will be reviewed. After all is in order, we will proceed with making an appliance to help with snoring and sleep apnea – giving you a healthier night’s sleep!
