TMJ Treatment for Migraines and Headaches

TMJ / TMD or temporomandibular joint disorder is a term used to describe symptoms such as headaches, jaw pain, face and neck pain, clicking or popping sounds in the jaw joint, limited jaw movement, "locking" of the jaw and chipped or worn down teeth. Many patients who suffer from TMJ problems report chronic pain in the head, neck, shoulders and back as well as pain in their teeth and jaws. Snoring, teeth grinding, stuffiness or ringing in ears and frequent ear infections are also common.

What is the temporomandibular joint/TMJ?

The TMJ is the jaw joint, the small joints in front of your ears that attach the lower jaw to the skull and is one of the most complex joints in the entire body. This area of the face includes an intricate network of bones, muscles and nerves.

What causes TMJ problems?

TMJ disorders have many possible causes including stress related clenching and grinding of the teeth or misalignment of the teeth due to old dental restorations or orthodontic treatment. Problems can also be caused by poor habits such as posture or excessive gum chewing but the most common cause is trauma due to an accident.

What can be done to help?

Since TMJ disorders have many possible causes, a comprehensive diagnostic work-up is essential. Our extensive experience and continuing education in the field of TMJ, Neuromuscular Dentistry and Full Mouth Reconstruction allow us to develop an individual treatment plan offering maximum relief and aesthetic rejuvenation.

Working with sensitive diagnostic tools that measure muscle activity we can measure and study the positioning of your teeth and jaw. For some cases, the next step is an orthotic appliance based upon these measurements. This orthotic keeps your jaw closing in the best position to keep your muscles relaxed, avoiding spasms and allowing the muscles to heal. Neuromuscular dentistry, which realigns your bite can alleviate years of pain and discomfort and give you a dazzling smile.
