Dental Implants
Boca Raton
If you wear a partial denture, or have gaps where teeth are missing, dental implants are a great way to get new permanent teeth. Missing teeth should be replaced somehow, and dentures are one way to do it. But dentures are famous for being annoying and inconvenient, for shifting while you chew and for becoming too loose over time.
New roots
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root. They're made from titanium because it was discovered that bone receives titanium very well, and grows in around it. The implant is a small cylinder with ridges around it for the bone to attach to. It can be used in several ways:
- As the root for a single tooth;
- To support a bridge; several implants can be carefully placed such that many artificial teeth will be firmly supported. A bridge relies on neighboring teeth for support, but with implants, no such support is needed.
- To support a denture, making it solid and comfortable.
Two types of implants
- The most common type is placed right in the jawbone (endosteal implant). Good bone density and volume are needed for this type.
- The other type, called subperiosteal, is placed on the bone, underneath the gum tissue and protruding up through it to support the artificial tooth. This is done if you have insufficient bone for an endosteal implant.
The procedure
Endosteal implants are done in two stages.
In the first stage, the implant is placed by Boca Raton implant dentist, Dr. Mogell. Then a period of several months is allowed to pass while the bone bonds itself to the implant, fixing it firmly in place. While this is happening, you can wear a temporary tooth replacement.
Some implant systems require a second visit, when the established implant is exposed and a small extra piece added called an abutment. It's a little metal post and will hold the replacement tooth. After this, the gums are given a few weeks to heal up.
Other implant systems already have this post attached to the implant, so this extra visit isn't needed. Dr. Mogell will determine which system is best for you.
In the second stage, a crown is attached to the implant, or to the abutment, if one was needed. The crown is made of porcelain and matched to your natural teeth in color. It's permanently attached, and soon becomes just like another one of your teeth, functioning and feeling no different. You'll forget you ever had this implant procedure done.
It's not wise to leave gaps in your teeth for very long. The neighboring teeth can start to move, to migrate in an effort to fill the gap. This can create misalignment, which can lead to a faulty bite. Then symptoms can start appearing, such as headaches, sore jaws, pain down into the neck and shoulders, and tooth grinding. You may have developed TMJ, temporomandibular joint syndrome (also known as TMD, temporomandibular joint disorder).
