General Dentistry

Boca Raton

Even more important than having a beautiful, winning smile is having a healthy smile. That's why, in addition to cosmetic dentistry, we provide general and family dentistry services daily to the Boca Raton area. Our general and family dentistry services include:

Oral Hygiene

We are here to help you keep your teeth and gums healthy for a lifetime. If you are considering cosmetic dentistry, we want to make sure your mouth is healthy first. If you are thinking about whitening your teeth, a good hygiene appointment will help you achieve a better result. We welcome new patients who value their oral health because we know you will love your experience with our Hygiene Department.

Dental cleanings are necessary to remove the plaque and tartar that build up on your teeth. Dental plaque is made up of tiny bacteria. As that plaque builds up on your teeth, it is flooded with calcium and mineral-rich saliva which calcifies or hardens it. This hardened plaque or tartar can only be removed with a dental cleaning. No matter how well you brush and floss, you cannot remove all of the plaque and tartar and that's why regularly scheduled dental cleanings are so important.

Our hygiene services offer you state-of-the-art preventive care and diagnostic services in a proactive approach by offering the following services:

  • Digital dental x-rays periodically taken for diagnostics.
  • Oral cancer screening utilizing ViziLite which saves lives with early detection.
  • Thorough periodontal charting and examinations of the gum tissue help prevent gum disease.
  • Early detection of tooth decay using the new DIAGNOdent laser technology.
  • Our hygienists teach you a regimen of good oral hygiene practices at home including daily flossing and brushing instructions.
  • Dental sealants and Fluoride are applied when necessary to protect teeth from decay.

Digital X-rays

Digital x-rays are one of the ways we pride ourselves technologically. We can now use a computer to quickly and easily capture, view, store and transmit your dental x-rays to another dental specialist if needed. More importantly, a digital x-ray can be viewed immediately and specific problem areas can be enhanced or magnified for viewing. Communication with patients is so important, and digital x-rays allow us to explain areas of concern in discussing dental problems and treatment options. Digital x-rays can also be easily compared to past and future x-ray images to determine any changes of conditions. They are safe because they require very low levels of radiation exposure, and environmentally friendly because no biohazardous waste is produced.

ViziLite

Oral cancer is one of the most curable diseases when caught early. That's why The American Cancer Society recommends that patients have a complete oral soft tissue examination at least once a year, and now you can do it painlessly and quickly with the ViziLite exam.

Unfortunately, oral cancer is not visible to the dental professional until it has reached an advanced stage in approximately 70% of patients. ViziLite is state of the art technology that assists in the early detection of oral abnormalities not always seen in a traditional examination.

And it's this simple. First you rinse your mouth with a special cleansing solution. As ViziLite passes over oral tissue that has been treated with the rinse solution, normal healthy tissue will absorb the light and appear dark and any abnormal tissue will appear white. This improves our ability to identify, evaluate and monitor any abnormal areas that might develop into oral cancer. ViziLite screening saves lives aren't you worth it?

DIAGNOdent

DIAGNOdent laser technology allows us to detect early tooth decay often missed when using conventional techniques of x-rays and probing. We simply shine a pain-free laser on the grooves of each tooth. This laser technology detects and measures hidden or subsurface cavities by measuring the fluorescence within the tooth structure and this information is electronically read as a numerical report.

DIAGNOdent gives us an accurate, reliable and non-invasive reading that indicates areas of decay that can be restored with just a simple filling. Early diagnosis and treatment will protect the integrity of the tooth structure without requiring extensive, costly restorations. The exam is quick and easy because no probing and poking or exposure to further radiation is necessary. Please ask us about this high tech diagnostic tool available for your benefit.

Periodontal Health Guidance and Treatment

Our hygiene services provide you with the most up to date preventive care because we don't want your oral health to compromise your overall health.

Important facts to know and then you will understand why we treat periodontal (gum) disease:

  • There is direct evidence that periodontal disease is linked to heart disease, respiratory disease, stoke, diabetes, premature births and low birth weight.
  • Bacteria can enter the blood stream from your mouth and cause serious problems in other areas of the body.
  • Periodontal disease in an infection of the gums. It can be controlled but it is not curable.
  • 75% of adult tooth loss is caused by gum disease or periodontal disease.
  • Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums and bone around the teeth caused by bacterial plaque. When the bacteria multiply, causing inflammation, the bone supporting the teeth begins to break down.
  • Approximately 80% of the population has early signs of gum disease.
  • Often there are no obvious symptoms of periodontal disease, but by the time it is noticed, it is already advanced!

Treatment for periodontal disease is comprehensive. Our hygiene department is highly skilled in offering a non-invasive approach to treating the complex nature of periodontal disease. Treatment plans are customized for each individual patient's needs and follow up and continued care ensures long term effectiveness.

Tooth Restoration

Our proactive preventive care and diagnostic services help prevent the future need for tooth restoration, however, sometimes restorations are necessary. We provide several restoration services such as fillings, onlays and inlays, crowns and bridges.

Fillings

Tooth colored fillings are also called composite fillings, white fillings or mercury-free fillings. Old metal fillings contained mercury to make the amalgam more pliable to fill the space caused by decay. Metal fillings expand and contract with heat and cold, allowing bacteria to invade the spaces around the filling and causing future decay. Most importantly, modern research has proven that mercury based fillings can release mercury vapor into a person's body, making it a non-desirable choice in dentistry today.

Composite fillings are stronger and more durable and they do not expand and contract. They are also tooth colored, aesthetically more pleasing, and eliminate the possibilities of allergies or sensitivity to metals. Dr. Mogell has chosen to use only composite resin fillings in restoring tooth structure.

Onlays and Inlays

When more tooth structure has been lost due to decay, and a filling just won't be sufficient, Dr. Mogell will restore the tooth with an onlays or inlays. This state of the art type of restoration is durable, reliable and preserves more tooth structure. These porcelain restorations reflect light and look natural.

Crowns

When decay has caused a larger percentage of tooth structure to be lost, the tooth must be replaced with a crown. Our porcelain crowns look like natural teeth because light naturally reflects through this long lasting material.

Bridges

One way to replace missing teeth is restoring your smile with a bridge. A porcelain bridge is made to look like your row of teeth. The replacement teeth are anchored to crowns on either side, creating a natural, healthy smile.

We also offer the following general and family dentistry services:

Dental Bonding

When a tooth has been chipped or worn, dental bonding is a method we can use to restore the tooth to its natural shape, color and strength. A durable bonding material is applied by Dr. Mogell's highly skilled hands to correct the imperfection.

Implant Crowns

Another way to replace missing teeth is to place an implant. Dental implants are titanium anchors that replace missing tooth roots. They are placed in the jawbone by a specialist, and Dr. Mogell attaches a porcelain crown after the healing process is completed. Implant crowns are the closest way to obtain a naturally beautiful looking smile if you are missing teeth and they are a comfortable alternative to dentures.
