Connection Between Obesity and Periodontal Disease?
The Harvard School of Public Health and the University of Puerto Rico have been conducting a study for 16 years to assess if there is an association between obesity and periodontal disease. The study involved close to 37,000 men from 1986 until 2002.
The results noted "clear evidence" obesity occurring prior to the onset of periodontal disease and "supports" a relationship between obesity and the risk of periodontal disease.
This the first such study of a large group of people over an extended period of time that shows the importance of regular dental hygiene visits to promote periodontal health.
